I am kidding [well, kind of, lol]. Gardening seems to be this mad dash in the spring to get all the plants in and once you do you breath a huge sigh of relief. Plants are in. Then you realize you need to keep all those plants alive and weeded until they are big enough to hold their own. Breath another sigh of relief. Holy moly, produce is now coming in faster than you can process it and you are drowning in tomatoes and zucchini and cucumbers and beans. And finally, it's the end of the season, your freezers and pantry shelves are full and you can rip all those plants out and bed down the garden for winter. Wait about three or four months and the garden bug returns with all the seeds catalogs that show up in the mailbox.

In all seriousness, I love the smell of the earth, the soil between my toes, and the peace of mind that comes with have a larder stock with really good food.
Our first successful honey harvest, 200 pounds of delicious, golden goodness! We borrow a hand extractor from a friend and I had wanted to get some video of us using it but got busy and forgot. Maybe next time!

This is what we started with. Not too bad! It had been made into a fish house so some of the cabinets had been ripped out. The original plan was to turn it into my little retreat space but I wanted be able to camp in it too!

It needed to be prettied up so we took out everything to paint. This is what we found. It had leaked around the lights and the water had settled by the window and ran down the wall.

It all had to come out. The one by fours around the window were rotten as well as the paneling. Grace wanted something to do so she was given a putty knife and scraped all the old caulk and weather stripping off the aluminum.

The walls were rotten all the way up to the point of the curve as well as underneath the corners. The metal frame of the trailer was in great shape for its age. Jake replaced all the joists that were rotten and re-framed the walls.

We didn't have any cows to milk so it was the perfect time to go. We had so much fun! We took our 1963 13' Winnebago travel trailer. It was a tight squeeze but we made it. We were able to visit some friends while down there and did a ton of spelunking. We traveled across the top of the state and fell in love with the Bull-Shoals area.
I had wanted to make some hay bags out of heavy duty fabric but didn't have the time or room to get out the sewing machine so I went to plan B. I made a grid with duct tape first and then cut out the squares. The goats loved it and can't just throw all of their hay on the ground.

I made mineral and supplement feeders out of some heavy duty plastic bottles too but didn't bring the camera down to take pictures at chore time. This smaller dish soap bottle made the perfect kelp container for the chickens.
I am far from being an expert on the subject but we have been successful with them for meat, eggs, and pets.
Baby steps but its getting done. The main motivation behind the clean up was a child forgetting to shut the door all the way and the cow getting into the bag of barley. Thankfully she didn't eat a lot and was okay. We worked on this project in June.

All feed and supplement containers labeled, floor swept and washed. A window will replace the plywood.

In the next few weeks we will insulate the remaining three walls, painting, putting up the rest of the trim and finishing the ceiling and lights.

It took us two years to get around to the twenty minute job of tearing down the old chicken coop. Now, granted we have been working on lots of other farm projects, but, twenty minutes ?? All of the kids helped so it may have taken Jake and I more than twenty minutes to get it all torn down two years ago when the kids weren't as big, who knows.

I don't have a before picture but it was a 8 x 12 building. Before it was moved to this location the roof and siding had been taken off of it. We covered the roof with a tarp and the sides with random pieces of press board and plywood to keep the items in it semi-dry. We cleaned out all the stuff, took down the tatter tarp and plywood last fall but never got the rest of the building down.

We kept all the solid wood and made a pile of the rotten/junk wood (the pile in the back of the picture). Feels good to have one more project done.

What is that one project that you keep putting off?Megan @ Purple Dancing Dahliashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09589793024632933098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4956401932368801028.post-49742338060612442572014-06-14T15:08:00.000-05:002014-06-14T15:08:45.282-05:00~ Apple Tree Success ~Our apple trees are are doing so well, above and beyond our expectations. All of the new tree we planted this spring flowered out and have fruit on them, lots of fruit. We will go around and pick off all the apples except the king fruit in each cluster. This well ensure that the trees are not overburden with a heavy fruit load and that we get really nice apples in the fall.

Lauren from Empowered Sustenance posted a recipe for No Oat Paleo Oatmeal. I was intrigued. Grains are a big no-no for healing Autoimmune Hashimoto's and I love a good hot breakfast cereal.

We also do not do grains until two as that is when a baby develops the necessary enzymes to digest properly prepared grains. My other babies have not really been interested in food until around the 10 - 12 month mark but not this big guy. Not only does he nurse every four hours but he sits at the table with us for every meal and has bites of what everyone else is eating. Breakfast gets tricky because he can not handle egg yolk yet and I will not give him the gluten free pancakes we have on occasion. He uses baby sign language to tell me when he is all done so while we utilize baby led weaning for meals, I feel okay feeding him this with a spoon.

I followed Lauren's instructions and used the mashed banana instead of egg. I pureed some peaches and used those to thin it down a bit. I left out the shredded coconut for baby. I will add it in next time. My other kids added blueberries, chia seeds, chopped nuts and even my little one with a sweet tooth didn't ask for extra sweetener. Love that!

What are your go-to favorite toppings/mix-ins for hot breakfast porridge?

Super easy and fast, a protein rich way to start the day. We pair a small cup of granola with an egg of some kinds and sometimes nitrate free bacon or sausage. Note that I used sprouted gluten free oats and soaked and dehydrated nuts to increase the digestibility.

1 cup each of almonds, cashews, pecans, and walnuts (I ran mine through the hand chopper)
2 cups of oats
1/4 chia seeds
1/2 raw cacao nibs
1/2 cup of coconut oil
1/4 cup of coconut sugar
drizzle of maple syrup

Set oven for 350*

Mix altogether. I just let the coconut oil melt in the oven for a few minutes and then stir it. I don't like making extra dishes if I don't have to. Check every five to ten minutes and stir when the top is starting to get a lovely golden brown. When evenly brown, remove from oven and let cool.

* I have been saving for a rug for the living room for a year and every time I get a little stash going we end up having to spend it on something else, until this week. I spotted the clearance sticker, over half off the original price and it was perfect for out living room. The colors can't match any better.

* I do not like mowing yard. I have now manage to turn our entire front yard into raised beds and we wood chip between them. We are able to get all the free wood chips we want from the power company. The are not at all a pretty color and they often times have large twigs and such in them, but their free!

* I did my grocery shopping for the next six weeks utilizing Costco and Azure Standards. For the seven of us I spent roughly $550 and there is a bit left over for more fresh produce when we run out.

* I was able to get all of the hanging baskets I have planted ahead of time so that they will have a nice head start when it's warm enough to put them out. Hanging baskets can cost $15+. All the seeds I used I had left from last year.

*Washed up all the winter clothes and put all the really heavy items (carharts) to hang dry.

* Used recycled boxes and lumber we all ready had to build my potato boxes. Square foot gardening + vertical gardening for the win!

*Found free photo editing software that has been a ton of fun to play with.

Even after the incredibly brutal winter we had the hens and chicks survive. It's such a lovely site.

The chickens seem as relieved as we are that the snow is gone and they can pick and scratch at the earth again.

A pumpkin from last year that got a soft spot before we could use it. Myra loves pumpkin, lettuce, greens, beets, turnips...she really enjoyed herself and she doesn't share well with others.

Ten days to go and we should have some lambs showing up. I am so excited and hopefully the weather cooperates and the sun will shine.

I am actually ahead of the game this year and was able to get a large portion of the yard cleaned up yesterday and the gardens by the front of the house cleaned out. I had a very happy baby that was content to swing and watch me work. I also had an awesome big kid that wanted to take him for a walk in the baby carrier.

My seedlings are in full swing in the garage turned green house. I have 24 solid cabbages, cauliflowers, bak choi and broccoli plants. I have two of the eight hanging baskets planted and a bunch of herbs started. Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants too. Grace started her 4H project with six types of cut flower seeds. Spring has indeed sprung.

What are your favorite spring activities?
Don't get me wrong. I would love to be able to take awesome pictures all the time, but it takes lots of practice and all my hours in a day are allocated to something else at the moment.

So, what's a girl with mediocre picture taking skills to do? Ribbet, free photo editing software. I had fun playing around with it today and created a new header for the blog, along with a facebook share button.

I took this photo

And did this

Pretty cool if I do say so myself. A fun way to take an okay picture and turn it into something really fun!

shared at The Clever Chick Blog HopMegan @ Purple Dancing Dahliashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09589793024632933098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4956401932368801028.post-73480351573921349602014-04-03T19:33:00.004-05:002014-04-07T10:18:01.019-05:00~ My Sheep are Naked ~

A picture of the little bit of spring that I have growing in my greenhouse. Lots of stuff popping up out there, now I just need this snow to leave.

Thursday I manage to get the barn all cleaned up, down to the frozen dirt anyway. The sheep are getting shorn either Monday or Tuesday. We picked up some oat straw today so that I can bed down the back half of the barn for them. I am getting it ready a day early because there is a chance of rain on Sunday night/Monday morning and I don't want them to be wet.
A bit of an early birthday present to myself, lots of new reading material. Alternative Treatments I have read before but I have wanted it in my library for quite some time. I am reading Natural Sheep Care right now and it is hands down THE BEST book on sheep care that I have ever read. I plan on doing a more in depth post on it after I have read it again.

Today Jake and I went to a class on taking care of apple trees. We ordered trees from Gilby's Orchard. We first learned of Gilby's last fall on a field trip and fell in love. The kids still tell me things they learned from that field trip. We ordered ten trees and can not wait for them to come. Snow be gone! Please...we want to plant our trees.

Our garage is heated so we moved the green house stand into the garage to hold all the trays. So far the cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and onions have sprouted. Tomorrow I will get more cool weather plants started after I get the barn cleaned out and the sheep pen built.
